This video connects formal histories of abstraction and women’s work with textiles to digital technology. For this piece, I transferred historical textile documentary films to video and edited footage of handcraft, film leader and film credits into 35 layers that form a triangle quilt in motion. I edited this video the same way I work with textiles: first by choosing an overall pattern design, then by making each triangle one at a time, and then by putting the triangles together into sequences, with attention paid to color, rhythm, shape, positive/negative space, and content. For the triangles containing film footage, I chose clips of hands at work on a particular part of a textile project. Displayed looping on an Ultra-high-definition monitor, the digital piece ruminates on materiality, tactility, labor, credit, and agency.
